About shoe sizes ...

A shoe size is an alphanumerical indicator for the fitting size of a shoe. Often this number takes into account just the length while the width is standard for economic reasons. Worldwide there are different shoe size systems that differ by the measurement unit, what they actually measure and the point where sizes 0 or 1 are placed. Two of the most used length units are the Paris point and the Barleycorn. The Paris point is commonly used in Europe and equates to 2/3 centimeters (about 0.26 in) while the Barleycorn, an old English unit is used in UK and U.S shoe measurements and equates to 1/3 inch.

The length of the foot is defined as the distance between the most prominent point of the toes and the most prominent part of the heel. This distance should be measured barefoot, standing position with body weight equally distributed on both feet. It is not unusual that the sizes of the two feet vary and in such case the biggest value measured should be taken in consideration.

The width of the foot is included in few shoe size systems. There are assigned either values in millimeters or letters to express dimensions from the narrowest to the widest size. For example: N (narrow), M (medium) or R (regular), W (wide)
