This mulch calculator helps you estimate how much mulch you'll need for your garden and landscaping plans both in English and metric measurements. Read more on this subject below the form, follow the calculation steps and discover an example result.

## How does this mulch calculator work?

This is a home tool that can help you in estimating how much mulch you'll need for your garden and landscaping plans. It can perform both English and Metric mulch calculations by simply entering the right tab according to your needs.

The mulch calculator takes account of the following data that should be provided:

- length of the garden or landscape expressed either in feet in case of the English tab, or in meters in case of Metric tab;

- width of the garden or landscape expressed either in feet or in meters;

- mulch depth expressed either in inches or in centimeters accordingly.

After the above data is provided the calculator performs the following steps:

- Mulch calculation in case of the English tab:

Step 1: Mulch depth conversion from inches to feet by the rate of 12 inches to 1 feet.

Step 2: Computing the area in square feet by multiplying the length by the width.

Step 3: Estimating the volume in cub feet by multiplying the area obtained one step before by the mulch depth in feet from 1st step.

Step 4: Dividing the volume in cubic feet by the cubic feet of the bags (either 2 cube foot bags or 3 cube foot bags) in order to estimate the number of the bags to be used.

Step 5: Dividing the volume in cubic feet obtained at the 3rd step by the 27 value in order to obtain the volume in cubic yards as optional information provided.

- Mulch calculation in case of the Metric tab:

Step 1: Converting mulch depth from centimeters to meters by the rate of 100 cm to 1 m.

Step 2: Approximating the area in square meter = length multiplied by width.

Step 3: Calculating the volume in cub meter = area from step 2 multiplied with the depth from step 1.

Step 4: Division of the volume in cubic meters by the cubic meters of the bags (either 25, 40, 50 or 60 kilograms bags).

## Example calculation

Space length = 15 feet

Space width = 10 feet

Mulch depth = 12 inches

Result: Area: 150.00 square feet

Volume in cubic feet: 150.00 cubic feet

No. of 2 cubic foot bags: 75.00 bags

No. of 3 cubic foot bags: 50.00 bags

Volume in cubic yards: 5.556 cubic yards

## What is mulch?

This is a material type that is spread over the surface of the garden's soil as a covering. It is used extensively due to various reasons. Some of the reasons the mulch is used in gardening are:

- makes the garden look better;

- retains the moisture in the soil;

- suppresses weeds;

- keep the soil cool.
