How does this wind chill calculator work?

This is a useful tool that allows you to estimate the wind chill temperature which is the temperature felt by the skin due to the wind. This is a temperature lower than the actual temperature, what we perceive to be colder than what the actual degrees are and so many people are interested in finding the perceived temperature in order to dress properly.

The wind chill calculator takes account of the wind speed in mph or km/h or m/s or knots and the actual air temperature in Fahrenheit or Celsius or Kelvin. All you have to do is fill in the two fields by choosing the convenient measurement unit.

The calculator displays the wind chill temperature by two different formulas as they are presented below:

  • New wind chill formula:

nWCT = 35.74 + 0.6215 * AT - 35.75 * WS0.16 + 0.4275 * AT * WS0.16

  • Old wind chill formula:

oWCT = 0.081 * (3.71 * WS1/2 + 5.81 - 0.25 * WS) * (AT - 91.4) + 91.4

WTC = Wind Chill Temperature

AT = Air temperature

WS = Wind speed.

Moreover, the results display the wind chill temperature in all the 3 temperature units Fahrenheit, Celsius and Kelvin.

Example calculation:

Wind speed = 25 miles/ hour and the Temperature is 15 degrees Celsius.

- Estimated wind chill by New Wind Chill Formula = 55 ºF or 13 ºC or 286 K

- Estimated wind chill by Old Wind Chill Formula = 44 ºF or 7 ºC or 280 K
