How does this big five personality test work?

This is a quick method that was designed in accordance to the Big Five psychological model Theory (Five Factor Model – FFM) in order to assess one’s personality based on the scores in 5 groups of characteristics, which will be presented in the following lines.

Personality traits assessed through such tests are very important as they can define and describe human behavior which represents the reactions triggered by various situations and these reactions that are dependent on personal characteristics.

What are the five personality dimensions?

Human behavior involves and interaction between a person’s underlying personality and situational variables. The situations someone finds themselves triggers a personalized reaction, these response is usually consistent with the underlying traits.

The Big Five model was defined in time by several sets of researchers starting from the already known personality traits and then moving on to factor analyzing measures of these traits from various studies. Their goal was to define the underlying factors of personality. The theory based on the these factors is called the FFM. This model can be applied in different types of personality assessments such as questionnaires and can be accurately used.

In psychology, these are five broad dimensions of personality. Research has demonstrated that groupings of characteristics tend to occur together so they could link them to a domain and then five of these areas of personality resulted. While there are significant descriptions of the five factors, depending on the studies conducted, researchers are yet to agree on the exact labels for each dimensions. The five factors are remarkably universal. Each factor will be presented below with some of the correlated specific traits.


Describes the tendency to seek stimulation, motivation and social rewards from social interactions. Some of the representative characteristics include:

Extraverts are inclined to search for the attention of others, engage actively in social contact. Highly motivated to earn friendship, admiration from others and value the concept of the social status. While extraverts find success from any kind emotionally rewarding and motivating and are perceived as active people, introverts conserve energy and don’t put as much value on social achievements.


Defines one’s inclination towards helping and supporting others. This domain focuses on the existence of pro-social behaviors with tendencies to be cooperative and kind rather than antagonistic and competitive towards others. It is also a measure of the well temper of a person. This personality dimensions include:

An agreeable person experiences a great deal of empathy and usually puts the needs of others above theirs. On the other hand, disagreeable individuals will exhibit hostile, competitive tendencies and are more likely to engage in conflictual relationships.


Describes  the tendency towards self-discipline, good organization and goal oriented behaviors. This factor features characteristics such as:

Conscientious individuals exhibit good impulse control, prefer to plan ahead every move and aim for achievement. They are calculated persons that can delay immediate gratification for the sake of a long term goal. On the other hand, a low score in conscientiousness is likely in impulsive individuals, detail oriented, that are easily sidetracked and are used to living in the moment.


Defines the inclination towards negative emotions easily that can sometimes be exaggerated in relation to the existence or not of real dangers that trigger negative reactions in individuals.

The score for neuroticism can also represent a measure for the degree of emotional stability, impulse control and for the resistance to the stresses in life. A high score in neuroticism describes a person that is likely to react with fear, anger or anxiety to a given situation that to another person or to a person with a lower neuroticism score would only trigger a mild negative response and a moving on reaction.
