How does this bipolar disorder test work?

Bipolar disorder

This is a mental disorder also known as manic depressive illness that consists of patterns of frequent mood swings, changes in energy, activity and in the general ability to fulfill day to day activities. There are three main types of bipolar disorder ranging in the severity of their symptoms:

BD I – Mania and depression, this is the classic form with manic or mixed episodes.

BD IIHypomania and depression, this form doesn’t have manic episodes because there is a milder form of mania involved but there are major depression episodes.

CyclothymiaHypomania and mild depression, this is basically the mild form of bipolarity that is characterized by cyclical mood swings without any major episodes of either depression or mania.

Manic depressive symptoms

In a typical cycle of the bipolar disorder there are four types of mood episodes that go up and down from the normal mood. There is hypomania and severe mania on the up side and mild and severe depression on the down side. The manic phase is characterized by heightened energy, persistent euphoria, lack of sleep and hyperactivity. The depressive phase on the other hand is full of low mood, lack of self worth, hopelessness and sadness.

Treatment

The main three directions of treatment are psychotherapy, medication and life skills counseling or lifestyle management. Psychotherapy consists of cognitive behavioral, familiar or interpersonal therapy, either individual or in a group aiming to get to the cause of the behavior and also to develop coping mechanisms. Medication consists of mood stabilizers to minimize the symptoms of the extreme episodes.
